all three books listed below. Complete the assignments that accompany
each of the books. The assignments are due the first week of September.
There will be a test on selected material from these books as well as an
ELA grade on the writing tasks. Test details will be discussed in
September. Make sure you have copies of these books with you when you
start the school year.
For the writing tasks, submit your best work! Be mindful of spelling, sentence structure, vocabulary, expressing your ideas clearly, and following directions.
The Witch of Blackbird Pond – Elizabeth George Speare.
Gathering Blue – Lois Lowry
As you read, take notes on both Kit’s and Hannah’s thoughts and
feelings, using post-its in your copy of the book. Your post-it notes
should be detailed and based on inferences, or educated guesses, about
these characters’ feelings and thoughts. Be sure to back up your
inferences with reasoning or evidence from the book. Since this book is
about 250 pages, please have at least 50 good post-it notes with detail.
While reading, take some post-it notes for yourself to keep track of the
plot. After reading, type a journal entry, pretending to be Kira. Here,
you will get into Kira’s mind and express your hopes and fears about
your future in the civilization. Be sure to use examples from the
reading as you express Kira’s point of view. Since you are pretending to
be a character, use first person terms like “I” and me.” The journal
entry should be one page, Times New Roman 12 font, double spaced.
I am Malala – Malala Yousafzai
Take notes on post-its as you read, marking anything important or interesting. Type a summary, in your own words about
the struggles Malala encounters and how she succeeds. The summary
should be one page, Times New Roman 12 font, double spaced.
